DAILY ARRIVAL

Check out the itinerary for this special adventure.

The word "oasis" connotes a place where one can forget the stress of everyday life - a place to relax, rest and renew.

Egypt's oases are just that: unspoiled refuges from the modern world. These remote oases have a sense of timelessness rare in the 20th Century...pockets of unharried civilization nestled in the dramatic setting of endless sand and sky. Here, where date-laden palms rustle to warm desert winds and the horizon of golden-white sand marries with brilliant night skies and silent spaces, you can create your own personal oasis within - an inner peace to take home when leave at last you must.

Experience Baharia Oasis, surrounded by black hills of ferruginous quartzite and dolorite...the unique landscape of surreal Dali-like erosion in The White Desert which dazzles the eye and mesmerizes the mind at sunrise and sunset...Bawiti Village and its natural spring hewn from rock... the oases of Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga and much more.

Never forget cavorting over dunes along ancient trading routes...savoring Bedouin-style meals around the campfire... the tranquility of bedding down in your desert tent beneath countless stars at the end of another unforgettable day. This and more awaits you on your Sahara Oases camping adventure!

ITINERARY:

DAY 1: Breakfast. Your "Sahara Adventure" begins with a drive to the Bahariya Oasis by safari vehicle through Egypt's famed desert. Lunch. Arrive Bahariya Oasis, known for its moderate climate both in summer and winter. Your camp tents are set up for the night near Bir Matar or Bir Kasaa. Free time to enjoy the surrounding desert mountains and valleys, olive and apricot trees, or take a swim in the hot water. View the panorama of cultivated lands from atop Mount Jebel al-Mi'ysrah, and observe the plentiful wildlife - especially birds, such as wheaters. After dinner, tea cooked Bedouin-style and the magical silence of the desert helps lull you to sleep beneath a crystal-black sky.

DAY 2: Breakfast. Drive to Bawati Village, capital of El Baharia Oasis. Its picturesque hillside court overlooks lush palm groves irrigated by the natural hot springs of Ain al-Beshmo. A walk through this village in the deep desert reveals a taste of desert life. Lunch. Visit Meftella, oasis site of Pharaonic tombs from the 26th Dynasty. Arrive at Biashmu Oasis, renown for its trees. A stop at the Coptic Basilica in Ain Ris Farafra Oasis is next. Excursion continues into the White Desert - a unique landscape of surreal wind-eroded rock formations, particularly magical at sunrise and sunset. At these times, as the moon rises over white crags, you sense that you are surrounded by icebergs and snowdrifts or are standing on a lunar landscape rather than being in a tropic desert. On moonless nights, the jeweled necklace of the Milky Way glistens crystal-like overhead as shooting stars dash through a sky black and clear like you've never seen it at home. Gather around the camp fire after dinner to drink tea and partake in lively talk with your guide.

DAY 3: Breakfast. Depart the White Desert for Farafar Oasis, rated one of the most natural oases in all Egypt because of its unspoiled remote location. Lunch. Meet Dr. Badr at his combination house-museum-studio, where this renown artisan exhibits in a sculpture garden notable paintings and ceramics created with native materials from the surrounding desert. Meet weaver Mr. Socks, who will show you beautiful hand-made sweaters, socks and scarves knitted from camel hair. Dinner.

DAY 4: Breakfast. Along the road from Farafra to El Kharga Oasis is the outstanding natural beauty of undulating sand dunes punctuated by fertile cultivated fields of rice, peanuts and fruit. El Kharga Oasis has been quite prosperous (as far as oases go) for ages. See the Al-Mizawaka tombs, their mix of pharaonic and Christian art dates back to the introduction of Christianity to this Arab nation. Lunch. A special treat this afternoon: a meeting with famous El-Hajj Kamal, mayor of Bedkhelu Village, who dedicated his home to be a rest house for educating travelers about life, laws, and traditions of desert living. Your journey continues to Al-Kasr Islamic City, an old town of narrow, mud-walled labyrinth alleys that separate houses featuring elaborate carved wooden lintels. Dinner.

DAY 5: Visit villages such as Balat and Roman city of Bashendi within huge El-Kharga Oasis. All meals.

DAY 6: Breakfast. Explore El-Kharga's bustling markets, oasis museum, the Hibit Temple and the cemetery of Al-Bagawat which contains 253 tombs in the pattern of domed chambers dating back to the 11th century A.D. (regarded as one of the oldest churches in Egypt). Today is a special opportunity for a camel ride in the desert with local residents. Lunch and dinner.

DAY 7: Breakfast. Return to Cairo by desert highway...where you can choose one of the following trips as the ideal Extension to your Sahara Desert adventure
